The instructors for the October workshop are Cecil Smith, Carol Gonnella, Larry Gibbs & David Lockwood. Their bios follow:

Cecil Smith & Carol Gonnella

Cecil obtained his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Memphis.

Carol obtained her undergraduate degree from Puget Sound University, graduating with honors, and her law degree from the University of Seattle.

Cecil Smith and Carol Gonnella have been teaching and writing professionally together since 1990.  They are fortunate enough to be invited several times each year to travel the country to teach seminars … from 1 – 2 hour presentations to 1-day, 2-day and 3-day workshops.

Cecil and Carol primarily teach advanced planning strategies to estate planning attorneys, financial advisors and CPAs, but also make presentations to lay persons such as physicians, businessmen and trade organizations.

Cecil and Carol are known for their plain English presentations that simplify complex estate and asset protection planning concepts by integrating a lot of colorful graphics and flow charts to illustrate these concepts.

Cecil is a former IRS Estate Tax Attorney and is currently a partner in the oldest law firm in Tennessee, Apperson Crump PLC, with law offices in Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee.

Carol, a former prosecuting attorney, is currently a partner in the law firm of Gonnella Adamson PC with law offices in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Together they have more than 50 years of experience representing individuals and families helping them design and implement estate plans that work to protect their clients from antiquated probate laws by removing their assets from the jurisdiction of the probate court in the event of incapacity and death, leave what they have to whom they want, the way they want (often in trusts that protect the beneficiaries from lawsuits, divorce proceedings, creditors and taxes), while at the same time saving post-mortem settlement expenses and death taxes.  Cecil and Carol are known for their ability to zero-out the estate taxes on any size estate.  A substantial amount of their counseling involves (a) helping their clients protect their assets from future lawsuits and creditors and (b) structuring IRAs (and other retirement plans) in order for their clients and their families to obtain the maximum income and estate tax benefits.

Both Cecil and Carol have experience in business, as Cecil and Carol are owners in more than a dozen non-law related companies … some together and some separately.  For example Cecil and Carol own Teton Agents, LLC, a company that serves as professional registered agent for Wyoming LLCs, Teton Institute, a company that trains lawyers and other professionals about when to use, how to form and how to administer Wyoming LLCs.  They also own Teton Publishers, LLC, a company that publishes “how-to-books” that are sold to lawyers and other professionals about advanced estate and asset protection planning strategies.

Cecil is licensed to practice law in Wyoming and Tennessee.

Carol is licensed to practice law in Wyoming and Washington.

Their law practices are separate, but they work together on a collaborative basis on high net worth cases referred to them by lawyers from around the country with whom Cecil and Carol co-counsel to help the referring lawyers design the estate plans.

Cecil and Carol are founding members of WealthCounsel, LLC, a national organization that trains and supports estate planning attorneys.

Both have been awarded the highest rating (AV) given by Martindale-Hubble, a national peer review organization that rates attorneys.

Cecil is married to Ann, and Carol is married to John.  Each has two children.  Cecil’s children are married and have started families, while Carol’s children are a few years behind Cecil’s in that respect.  Carol has a daughter who, after graduating from college, has started a career in the outdoor clothing industry, and her son is in college and plays on his school’s ice hockey team.

Cecil’s hobbies include art, photography and travel.  Cecil paints portraits and landscapes in watercolor and oil.  Sometimes he paints from photographs he has taken on his trips.

Carol and John also love travel as well … often sailing the Caribbean,  the Northwest waters of the Pacific and the South Pacific on their sailboat, Journey, with their family and friends … John’s the captain.  Carol also enjoys photography … her photographic interests include capturing photos of family, travel and wild animals.
